Overview / Logistics

Back in module 7, we saw how to use convolution to imagine a sound as if it were played in a different environment. In this brief assignment, you will imagine a tune played in some environment. You will need to gather an impulse response for your environment and a tune you want to play in that environment. To create your impulse response, you should clap somewhere and record it (if you can't come up with any ideas, you can steal them from echo thief). Then, convolve this with some tune of your choosing. We will have a gallery contest as a class, and the winner will receive 1 extra credit point.

Learning Objectives

  • Practice conceptual understanding of convolution
  • Simulate real world environmental sound with convolution

What To Submit

When you are finished, please submit your impulse response, the tune you used, and the audio file with the convolution to canvas. Please also submit a title for your musical statement, a description of what you did, and a name or pseudonym you would like to use in the musical gallery on our class web site.
